Oscars season has officially begun. This year's prizewinner seems to be Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez with 13 nominations. A few months ago, these nominations wouldn’t have raised any eyebrows. But to many who watched the film afterward, the Academy seemed to be behind on the conversation surrounding it.

A 19-year-old boy drops out of college and travels from St. Louis County, Minnesota, to New York City with a guitar and a case of harmonicas. That same night, he has his first gig at Cafe Wha?---a club described as “a subterranean cavern, liquorless, and ill-lit.” Dylan is called the “voice of a generation,” and he goes on to change the future of folk music.

In the months running up to the election, Donald Trump ran on an unyielding immigration agenda that advocated for mass deportations, the militarization of the southern border, and the revocation of birthright citizenship. Two weeks into the new administration, President Trump is attempting to keep his promise of sanctioning mass deportations.

Since its launch in 2016, TikTok, a video-sharing social media app, has gained immense popularity among users of all ages. Users can share a diverse range of videos on TikTok, including lip-syncing, dancing, video edits, cosplay, and product promotions through the app’s TikTok Shop. Despite its popularity, however, the U.S. government has expressed concerns about how the app may compromise national security.

Los Angeles residents woke on January 7th to see a world engulfed in relentless, all-consuming flames. California is known for its wildfires and the state’s dry climate and vegetation, brought on by now-common drought conditions, make perfect kindling for fires to rapidly spread over large swaths of land.

On December 9, President Marc C. Conner announced the official opening of the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center on January 21st, 2025. This long-awaited project was possible due to the generosity of the McCaffery-Wagman-Wachenheim families and by the additional support of Skidmore alumni and families.

Taylor Swift and the End of an Era

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour came to an end on December 8th, 2024, after almost two years. Her three-and-a-half-hour-long concert prominently featured all eras of her music from her eighteen-year career. Swift has not only left an impact on modern music and performance but also a lasting economic impact on all the cities she’s visited.

Through my experiences as a history major at Skidmore, it has become clear to me that the college places an importance on exploring history “from the bottom up.” Within the Skidmore History and American Studies Departments, the voices so often ignored and overlooked throughout history are thrust into the limelight.

On December 4, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside an entrance to the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel on West 54th Street in New York City. The suspect, now believed by authorities to be Luigi Nicholas Mangione, age 26, shot him multiple times in the back and legs and fled on an e-bike.

North Korean Involvement Adding to Tensions to Ukraine-Russia War

As of late June, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-Un and Russian President Vladimir V. Putin have revived a peace of history dating back to the Cold War. Putin and Kim Jung Un signed a mutual defense treaty during a summit in Pyongyang in June, with Putin mentioning that this would be a “breakthrough” in solidifying bilateral relations.

Black Super Hero Magic Mama, written by Inda Craig-Galván and based on a true story, is coming to Skidmore on November 22. This is the first play by a Black playwright to be presented as a seminar production by the college. During this past month, I sat down with the cast members and asked their thoughts and experiences working on this production and why its story is important to them.

Skidmore Athletics Raises Over $380,000 in Record-Breaking "All In to Win" Campaign

From October 2-6, Skidmore Athletics held its eighth annual All in to Win campaign, a fundraising initiative focused on supporting and enhancing all of Skidmore’s athletic programs. After a grueling election season, The Associated Press declared Donald J. Trump the 2024 Presidential Election winner at 5:34 a.m. EST on November 6th. His victory came upon his successful capture of key swing states—North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—bringing him to 277 electoral college votes, enough to secure his future position as the 47th President of the United States of America.

On September 27, 2024, the great actress Dame Margaret Natalie Smith, colloquially known as Maggie Smith, passed away. She was best known for her roles in Downton Abbey and Harry Potter. As a result of her numerous accolades for works in movies, television, and plays, in 1990, Queen Elizabeth named her a Dame for her services to the performing arts.
