One week ago, the Student Government Association (SGA) announced the results of their fall semester elections. There were 17 spots open for election, all of which were successfully filled. Within the class of 2022, there were nine spots that needed to be filled and what followed was a competitive race. After running a strong campaign, Sophia Paulino Adames emerged as the first-year class president.
Adames originally hails from La Romana, Dominican Republic but has lived in New York City for the past two years. She applied early decision to Skidmore and as soon as she joined the class of 2022 Facebook group, she got to work making connections with her classmates. After befriending more of her fellow first-years on her pre-orientation ‘SCOOP’ trip, she knew that she wanted to run for a position in SGA. She had always wanted to serve in student government, but never got the chance to run for a position during her high school days. College, however, offered the perfect opportunity for her to finally fulfill her dream.
Planning a possible double major in Studio Art and Business with minors in either Theater or French, Adames has big plans for her run as class president. Her main goal is to raise awareness about issues pertaining to student diversity on campus. She plans to tackle this goal by hosting fundraisers for on-campus diversity programs, and she is especially excited to “get to know how SGA works and how to plan events.”
