I would like to take this opportunity to respond to the article that was featured in the Skidmore News last week about Mr. Andrew Blumenberg, a candidate for Saratoga Springs City Court Judge.
After quickly commenting on the fact that Mr. Blumenberg defended Mr. Thomas Gorman, a local man who murdered a fellow Skidmore student while drunk driving, the article shifted focus to the job requirements of a Public Defender. While it is completely understandable that our judicial system affords the right to counsel to all criminal defendants, it does not simply make a local Public Defender the best candidate for City Court Judge.
Is it not too soon to be campaigning for votes on our campus, only two years after standing up to defend an obviously guilty person who took so much from the Skidmore family? I would argue that a career as the “devil's advocate” is honorable, but not necessarily an ideal springboard for elected public office.
I would urge all of my fellow students who are registered in Saratoga Springs to go to polls on Tuesday November 7th and vote against Andrew Blumenberg.
