Show Your Sport has invited Kristin Russo and Kate Fagan to campus for a conversation about LGBTQ inclusivity and how we can foster safe spaces in the classroom, on the field, and within our personal lives. The event will be on Monday, April 11th at 8:00 pm in Filene. Kristin and Kate will be available after the event for a book signing, with books provided by Northshire Bookstore.
Kristin Russo is co-founder of Everyone Is Gay and The Parents Project and host of the PBS Digital Series "First Person." She has spent the past five years traveling to high schools and colleges across the country speaking to young people about LGBTQ issues and allyship. Kate Fagan is a columnist and panelist for ESPN and ESPN2. She is the author of "The Reappearing Act: Coming Out as Gay on a College Basketball Team Led by Born-Again Christians" and a former Division I basketball player at UC Boulder. She is currently working on a forthcoming book on the mental health of collegiate athletes.
This event is intended to shift the Show Your Sport campaign from visibility of LGBTQ athletes and allies to education for the whole community. We think this is especially important because this event is specifically targeting the portion of the Skidmore community who are perceived, whether rightly or not, as promulgators of homophobia and heteronormativity. We hope that with an honest and raw discussion of homophobia on our campus and within athletics, we can all move towards fostering a safer campus for all LGBTQ individuals on campus, not just in athletics.
The event takes place Monday, April 11th at 8 PM in Filene
