More and more students are on the hunt for summer internships every year, hoping to gain experience in a certain field or even to simply help narrow down potential career choices. While the process for applying for these internships can seem daunting and stressful, the Skidmore Career Development Center (CDC) is here to help. The CDC assists students in drafting resumes and cover letters, they give advice on how to behave during an interview, and address many other concerns and aspects of finding an internship or job.
In respect to those summer internships, the CDC offers the Skidmore Summer Funded Internship Awards Program (SSFIAP). The SSFIAP provides full-time Skidmore students with the opportunities to spend their summers taking part in unpaid internships, doing volunteer work, researching with various companies, and participating in various community service projects. Through these opportunities, students gain the relevant knowledge, skills, and experience that are often required for job applications in today’s job market. These awards greatly benefit the students, and allow them to become competitive candidates in the application process for future positions. This is a very competitive program, and therefore the CDC asks applicants to check that they meet all of the requirements, as incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
Many students have benefited from this program. After completing a summer internship with one of these awards, Maya Gurung (’15) received an offer for a full-time position at a company in New York City. This company, Adhikaar, is an organization that assists thousands of individuals as it strives to improve the lives of the Nepali-speaking community. For current students who are interested in this organization, Adhikaar will be visiting campus for the Careers That Make a Difference Career Fair on Friday, March 4th from 3PM - 4:30 PM in the Murray-Aikins Dining Hall.
The application process for the SSFIAP began on January 25, 2016 and the deadline for most of the awards is Friday, March 25th by 11:59 PM. Interested students can find the list of awards offered and their deadlines through the link above. Before applying for an award, applicants need to have applied for internship(s), but for some of the awards these internships do not have to be secured by the time of the application. The application for these awards must be posted by their specified deadlines on My CDC.
Thanks to the generosity of the Skidmore Parents Council, parents, alumni, employees and friends of Skidmore College, the Skidmore Summer Funded Internship Awards program is made possible. Skidmore students who take advantage of this opportunity will return to campus in the fall having made impressive strides in the real job market, and having networked with organizations and companies that will surely benefit them in the future.
