A Fall Guide To Spooky Novels and Movies

As the beginning of fall approaches, I can’t help but turn to my favorite media to get into the fall spirit and prepare for spooky season. I think it’s safe to say that fall has some of the best aesthetics, especially in Saratoga Springs, with plenty of beautiful trees beginning to turn.

I always go to my fall playlist to help me enjoy all that the season has to offer. Some of my favorites include “Spooky” by Dusty Springfield, “Wicked Game” by Chris Issac, “White Winter Hymnal" by Fleet Foxes. Some other great choices are "How Soon Is Now?” by The Smiths, and “Witches” by Alice Phoebe Lou. The majority of these songs are a little moody, but upbeat enough to enjoy on either sunny or foggy fall days.

But not just songs will make this list. I’ve been watching Halloween movies since I was very little, The Addams Family being very dear to my heart. Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, and Casper are some good ones for the family, and Lost Boys, Beetlejuice, and Fantastic Mr. Fox are a few of my more personal recommendations. Out of the three personal recs, Lost Boys is probably my favorite, which is an 80s vampire movie with some crazy special effects and an amazing soundtrack.

And what would this fall-ish article be without a well-earned mention of Gilmore Girls? It’s a classic feel-good show that brings all the cozy vibes. Both Rory and Lorelai’s stylishly warm outfits and Star Hollow’s fall decorations make this show and its characters a true staple of the season. On the flip side, if you’re looking for stunning animation and a thrilling storyline, look no further than Over The Garden Wall. It’s a show full of humor, very likable characters, and is chock-full of charm.

To fully complete this list, I should also mention a few of the best eerie novels I’ve read that help get me in the Halloween mood. My book list features Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab, and Carrie by Steven King. I would especially like to recommend The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires and Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil if you’re on a vampire media kick like I am.

I hope these lists help you get ready for fall and enjoy this wonderful season!
