Can you believe we’re already three weeks into this semester? How time flies. And things aren’t slowing down anytime soon! Especially when it comes to events and programs that can be found on and around Skidmore’s campus. With so many events jamming themselves into our weekend schedules, how can you keep them straight? Luckily, we’re here to help.
1. The 31st Annual National ComFest: Nine schools from around the country. Four professional sketch and stand-up acts. Over a year’s worth of hard work by Max Grossman ‘20 (Sketchies), Sarah Marlin ‘20 (Skidomedy & AKT), and Parisa Kabiri ‘20 (AKT). The trio has put together four jam-packed comedy shows for the ComFest, which will be hosted right here on Skidmore’s campus. Tickets are on sale now in Case Center, and cost $7 for one college show, $10 for a professional show, or $20 for all weekend shows.
2. Hear Benjamin Dryer Talk: I’ve been told to not put “nerdy” events on this list in the past, but if Benjamin Dryer is coming to Skidmore College, then I feel like everyone should know about it. Join the Vice President of Random House — again, just want to make sure we all read that: Vice President of Random House — at 8pm on Tuesday, Feb. 06 in the Tang’s Payne Room.
3. 24-Hour Filmmaking Marathon: Have you ever wanted to try your hand at filmmaking but maybe didn’t have the talents or time? Well, the Media and Documentary Studies department is not letting you use those tired excuses anymore. Get a group together, and spend 24 hours (from Feb. 7 to 8) conceiving, filming, and editing your own short film. All you have to do is register.
4. Juried Skidmore Student Exhibition: There is perhaps no better feeling than supporting your fellow students. And this is why the Schick’s Juried Student Exhibition is always an exciting event to go to and walk around between classes. The show, which opened just yesterday, Feb. 04, features work of all shapes and sizes, by students from all class years. Think big oil paintings, handmade and bound books, ceramics, and more. Stop by sometime to celebrate all the hard work your peers have done until the exhibit closes March 3.
5. Noah Jackson: Join ink and pen artist Noah Jackson at Soave Faire for a drawing demonstration. When describing his work, the Purchase graduate says “The balance of line work, contour, and color is built and processed in my portraits as I work, creating a harmony in the page I work on.” You can find examples of what he does on his website here. The event is free to the public from 11am-3pm on Saturday, Feb. 08.
