Snow days: the greatest perk of having to deal with numb fingers and toes for multiple, consecutive months of the year. However, when the snow piles past knee height, essentially becoming a health hazard for those of us who haven’t hit the gym since the fall, what are we to do? You can only binge-watch a Netflix series for so long before that even loses appeal.
Here are some recommendations on how to spend your snow day that might break the conventional hot chocolate, popcorn, and Harry Potter movie marathon you are used to. You might want to take some notes — and possibly a trip to Walmart.
A “snow day box” is something that can definitely come in handy if you live in the northeast. Inside, I make sure to stock facemasks to encourage relaxation, lotion to combat the inevitable dryness, and a pair of fuzzy socks (10/10 recommend aloe-infused socks for additional moisturizing). And don’t forget to place your preferred snacks inside. My favorites include matcha flavored Pocky, Milk Duds, and Chai Latte mix. The box doesn’t have to be something super fancy, it is simply a collection of the things that provide you comfort during the tedious winter months.
When the snow is finally the perfect consistency for sledding, there’s no need to worry over not having a conventional sled stored away. Other common household items that are just as good include an old baking sheet or a plastic laundry basket. You could even clear out one of your storage bins and use that — put your creative thought to use!
For some reason, using everything but a sled makes the sledding experience even more enjoyable.
Once all the work has been completed, the snow has been played in, and the sun is down, it’s time to turn on the TV. It is crucial that the movie choice of the night has three specific properties: it must be fast-paced, captivating, and mind-transporting. Movies with these qualities are the perfect mix to teleport you to another place while you’re trapped inside.
While Home Alone is a classic snow day film, there are definitely some other movies out there that are perfect for the nights when the snowfall seems never-ending. Personally, Happy Feet is on my list for the next snow day, though other options include The Breakfast Club and Dumb and Dumber because they truly captivate you and are 100% worth the watch.
So, next time the snow takes over a day, try some of these snow day tips and turn those often-unproductive circumstances into a relaxing and re-motivating break from all the stress that the snow paints over.
