Mental illness and emotional trauma are just as valid as their physical counterparts, and many students of the community believe Skidmore College is currently incapable of providing adequate mental health care. There are mental health emergencies, unrelated to suicide, that require immediate attention, and Skidmore currently provides no assistance for these situations. Students have been to the counseling center during a devastating crisis, only to be denied counseling because they were not suicidal. Students experiencing anxiety attacks have been turned away from the facility. Others experiencing mental breakdowns have been given a 5-7 day waiting period, before receiving an appointment. Students reeling from the loss of a family member have been denied immediate counseling. Lastly, there are only three full time psychologists at Skidmore, and the severe understaffing prevents students from receiving necessary care.
